It’s that time…. time for some after school fun at Monte Vista. Please read below for information regarding Afterschool Rocks! registration this semester.   Please make sure your email and all other contact information is up-to-date with the front office (and PTA) so you receive all school-related information. Information will also be posted on the school website, mves-aps-nm.schoolloop.com

Paula Jackson, Monte Vista Physical Education teacher and school Wellness Lead, is running the Afterschool Rocks! program this semester. You can reach her at: mvesafterschoolrocks@gmail.com.

 

Afterschool Rocks! Registration will take place on Wednesday, September 7, Thursday, September 8, and Friday, September 9 – or until maximum number of students are registered. Registration will be from 12:15 pm to 1:30 pm (Wednesday), 7:30 am to 10:00 am (Thursday and Friday), and 4:00 pm to 4:45 pm (Thursday). You may not reserve a “spot” via email. Registration can only be completed during those times.

If you are not able to attend registration at the scheduled times you CAN send the completed and signed form and payment with another adult or with your child.

  • Wednesday, September 7      12:15 pm to 1:30 pm  
  • Thursday, Sept 8                     7:30 am to 10:00 am   and    4:00 pm to 4:45 pm
  • Friday, Sept 9                         7:30 am to 10:00 am

Afterschool Rocks! Important Things to Know:

 

  • Registration is in person, at school. No online registration is available for Afterschool Rocks!
  • Full payment must be made at registration.
  • Cash or Checks are acceptable. Please make checks out to "MVES".
  • Registration form must be completed, signed by parent/guardian, and turned in at time of registration.

You are welcome to download and print off copies of the registration form. There will also be registration forms at the registration table.

  • Registration for classes is first come, first served. If you are not able to attend registration at the scheduled times, you are welcome to send the completed and signed form, along with full payment, with another adult or with your child. 
  • Your child is welcome to stand in line to register; although, your child MUST go to class when the 9:00 am bell rings. If your child attends Campfire before school and you want your child to register for an after school class by him/herself, you will need to discuss their policy for letting your child do so.
  • Class maximum numbers will be observed. If you really want your child in a particular class – be there early Wednesday afternoon, September 7!
  • If a class does not get enough students signed up, the class will be canceled and refunds will be issued or student will be allowed to register for another class that has not filled up yet. 
  • Classes may have a "waiting list", if necessary. Payment will be required in order to be put on the "waiting list". The "waiting list" will be subject to after school class teacher approval.
  • Please make sure you include a LEGIBLE email address on the registration form so Paula Jackson can communicate Afterschool Rocks! information with you in a timely manner.
  • Classes will begin the week of September 12; except for 3 classes, which will begin the following week,       Sept. 19.
  • Classes will end the week of December 5.

  • Photography with Ryan Martinez (MVES Gifted Teacher)                                                                    grades 4-5             8 students max          $120 per student, plus $10 materials fee  (Ryan’s Classroom)                                                                    

Photography uses science to create art. This class will have fun activities to teach both photographic skills and the science of film and digital photography. But, be warned there will be FUN and optional homework assignments.       $120 per student, plus $10 materials fee

 

  • Basketball with Jackie Bartelson (MVES Teacher) grades 3-4-5        15 students max      $75   (Gym)

Let’s play basketball! Learn and practice dribbling, passing, shooting and team skills on the court from Jackie Bartelson, our new 3rd grade teacher. Jackie played basketball for the University of Alaska Anchorage. This class is also being offered on Thursdays.     $75 per student

 

  • Learning Spanish the Fun Way! With Christi Sanchez (MV parent)    

** STARTS ON MONDAY, SEPT 19 **

$60, plus $20 materials fee      grades 2-3-4-5    20 students max   (Room TBD)

In this fun and dynamic program your child will learn Spanish through interactive means; including but not limited to, music, sports, games, and art. With this learn-by-doing-and- playing method, your child will be so busy having fun they won’t even realize they're acquiring the basis for a whole new language. Instructor is fluent in Spanish!                   $60 per student, plus $20 materials fee

  • Lego Club with Paula Jackson (MVES PE Teacher)   grades K-1-2-3-4-5    25 students max                    $40                 (Gym)

Have fun meeting new friends and building imaginative, colorful and exciting Lego creations!  All Lego bricks and building materials are provided. Please do not bring Legos from home.  (Donations of Legos, however, are always welcome.)  All grades, K – 5, are welcome to attend.  Gym     $40 per student

  • Monte Vista Student Council  with Jeff Tuttle (MV teacher)                                                              grades K-1-2-3-4- 5              25 students max       $50         (Jeff’s Classroom)                                                                                                                                                                        

 

Don’t just sit there and watch others be involved…. Join the Monte Vista Student Council and be directly involved in doing amazing things in our community. MV Student Council works to benefit our school in a multitude of ways: recycling, tree planting, sponsoring community events, cleaning our campus. Have a great idea for our MV community? Join Student Council, share your idea, and watch it come to life right before your eyes!                                $50 per student

 

 

 

 

  • Games Club with Julie Crocker (MVES Teacher)                                                                                        grades 2-3-4-5       25 students max             $82 per student, plus $8 materials fee        (Julie’s Classroom)

Love to play games? Join the Games Club and play your old favorites and learn some new games. Make friends while enjoying boards games, card games, dice games, team games, interactive games, and even GIANT games!      $82 per student, plus $8 materials fee

 

  • Science Fun! with Julie Morris (Madison Middle School Science Teacher)                              grades 3-4-5                  15 students max                      $80, plus $10 materials fee        (Room TBD)

 

Science is so much fun! Our Science Fun! class will be filled with exploring, learning, and higher level hands-on experiments planned especially for students in grades third, fourth and fifth. Come see how cool Science can be!  $80, plus $10 materials fee

  • Art with Alex Villegas (MVES Teacher)                                                                                           grades 2-3-4           15 students max       $70 per student, plus $20 materials fee       (Alex’s Classroom P7)

Art lessons for students from 2nd grade -4th grade. Come and learn about artists, while learning art techniques with a variety of media including watercolor, oil pastels, acrylic paint. Your child will have a finished piece of art at the end of every lesson.     $70 per student, plus $20 materials fee

  • Gardening / Plant Science with Christi Sanchez (MV parent)                                                            grades 2-3-4-5        20 students max       $55 per student, plus $20 materials fee          (Room TBD)                                                                                ** STARTS ON TUESDAY, SEPT 20 **

Love gardening? Curious about flowers and veggies? Interested in botany and how and why plants grow? This class is for you! Learn about great gardening and the science of plants. Our own Monte Vista Garden will be one of our classrooms.                      $55 per student, plus $20 materials fee

  • Cartooning Club with Wally Walstrom (MVES Gifted Teacher)                                                        grades 3-4-5              10 students max   $85, plus $15 materials fee            (Wally’s Classroom) 

In Cartooning Club you'll learn to draw cartoons and comics! We'll work on drawing different facial expressions, as well as hard-to-draw parts like hands and feet, and the whole body in various poses. Don't worry; we'll draw cartoon animals too! We'll also study manga (Japanese and Japanese-influenced comics) and compare it to other styles. Students will create their own characters and write, pencil, and ink their own comics that can be photocopied. We'll also try scanning drawings and coloring them digitally. If you're an aspiring artist, join Cartooning Club and get drawing!      $85 per student, plus $15 materials fee

  • Color Me Happy! Coloring Club with Julie Crocker (MVES Teacher)                                                 grades 2-3-4-5            12 students max        $85 per, $10 materials fee      (Julie’s Classroom)                

Everyone loves to color! Join Julie and your friends and color super-cool drawings and designs – even create your own unique coloring pages. We will use markers, crayons, colored pencils, gel pens … and all this coloring will make you so happy!!                             $85 per student plus $10 materials fee

  • Techno Wizards with Jennifer Marquardt (MVES Librarian)                                                   grades 3-4-     $75, plus $25 materials fee      15 students max (Balanced boys/girls)      (Library)

Light up your origami! Create a spooktacular "Tunnel of Terror" through the library! Play around with robots! That and more will create magic for your Techno Wizardry!             $75 per student, plus $25 materials fee

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.”  This quote from Dr. Seuss is perfect! And so are books! Come to Booklovers Book Club and share your love of reading and the incredible adventures and characters we find in stories.   $55 per student, plus $10 materials fee

  • Martial Arts With Michael Adams  (MVES parent)   grades K-1-2-3-4-5    20 students max     $55  (Gym)

Kids love the challenge of Martial Arts! Your child will explore the world of martial arts by learning the core concepts of kick boxing, hapkido, and submission wrestling. Discipline, physical activity, and repetition of motion are the pillars of each class. Everyone participates in lessons and learns at his or her own pace. No one is left out or humiliated.  Martial Arts is an activity children can begin now and practice throughout their lifetime. Join MV parent Michael Adams and have some Martial Arts fun on Friday afternoons!                         $55 per student

 

 

 

 

Afterschool Rocks! MORE Important Things to Know:

  • A registration form is attached. Please feel free to copy the form if you need more than one. Registration forms will be made available via email and web site. Please try to print and complete registration forms BEFORE coming to the registration table. Please make sure all contact information on the registration form is complete and up to date.

 

  • Class times on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday are from 3:50 pm (end of school) to 5:00 pm. Students must be picked up no later than 5:00 pm. If a student attends KASA or Campfire, the student will return to that program at the end of their class. If a student is not picked up from class by 5:15 pm, the student will be taken to the KASA program. There will be a $10 KASA fee each time.  if a student is consistently picked up late, other arrangements may need to be made.

 

  • Classes will begin the week of September 12, 2016. There will be approximately 10-12 class sessions during the fall semester, depending on the day. Classes will end the week of December 5, 2016.

 

  • No classes will be held on the following dates:

Thurs, Oct 6 (In-Service Day)

Fri, Oct 7 (APS Fall Break)

Tues, Nov 8 (Election Day)

Fri, Nov 11 (Veteran’s Day)

Mon – Tues, Nov 21-22 (Parent / Teacher Conferences)

Wed – Fri, Nov 23-25 (APS Thanksgiving Break)

 

  • If a class has to be cancelled due to teacher absence, parents will be notified as soon as possible by phone (text) and email.

 

  • All registration and materials fees may be paid by cash or check only at the time of registration. Payment is due at registration. Checks made payable to “MVES”.

 

  • Limited scholarships may be available. Please contact Paula Jackson for information.

 

  • Please observe the grade level guidelines. There will be no exceptions made.

 

  • You are welcome to email Paula Jackson at mvesafterschoolrocks@gmail.com with questions and/or concerns. You may not, however, “reserve” a space in a particular class by email.

 

  • Several classes also have an additional materials fee, which is also due at registration.

Registration takes place Tuesday, August 9th, from 2-5 pm.

If you are registering a new to Monte Vista student, please bring a birth certificate and proof of residency, such as a current gas or water bill, or lease agreement.   Please also bring your immunization records.

If you are a registering a returning student, please come in with current insurance information, doctor and dentist contact information, immunization records (if recently updated).

Registration is from 2-5 pm on the 9th – grades k-2 register on the front lawn, 3,4,5 register in their new classrooms.  The first day of school for grades 1 through 5 is Thursday, the 11th.
